Ukrainian cuisine is very much a part of the country’s culture, lifestyle and customs. This biggest country in Europe is well-known for its great diversity and rich authentic traditions; same applies to the traditional Ukrainian cuisine. It offers amazing flavors and delicious tastes. Ukrainian cuisine stems from peasant dishes based on the plentiful grains and staple vegetables grown in the country.

Some of the best Ukrainian dishes are actually very simple. Considered the “breadbasket of Europe”, it follows that bread is a staple in Ukraine. There are dozens of methods used in baking breads, which are often used in authentic traditions and customs. Dishes often contain pickled vegetables when these are not in season and certain dishes can only be made when ingredients are available. Pastries and cakes are popular, but they are not very sweet.

In the first half year of 2017, Ukraine exported sunflower oil to more than 100 countries and the volumes increased by 57 %.

The wine industry of Ukraine is well-established with long traditions. A wine culture existed in today's Ukraine already in the 4th century BC at the south coast of the Crimea. Presses and amphoras were found from this period. Wine cultivation in the northern part of the country (around Kiev and Chernihiv) however only started in the 11th century by monks.

The wine grapes most commonly in Ukraine are a mixture of international varieties of French origin and a host of lesser-known local varieties. The usual grapes include Merlotand Cabernet Sauvignon as well as Alsace's classic white-wine trio of Riesling,Gewurztraminer and Pino Gris, while the more obscure include Georgia’s Rkatsiteli andSaperavi, Aligote, Bastardo and Feteasca.
